Hence, pick the time slot that suits you the best while booking your ticket. Ticket holders are requested to line up opposite the entrance in passage ways 1 to 3, based on the ticket purchased, 15 minutes before the selected time slot. Early queuing is not allowed. Guests who have missed their reserved time will be denied entry.

VISITORS’ GUIDE

Things to know before you visit the Vatican Museum

Make your museum experience seamless with our expert recommendations

1. Why Buying Tickets Offline Is Not the Best Option

While you can purchase Vatican Museum tickets either online or at the venue, we strongly advise against buying them last minute at the ticket counter. Here’s why:

The queues for offline tickets are notoriously long and stagnant, with average waiting times of around two hours, regardless of when you arrive. Even if you plan your visit for 8:00 AM, when the museum opens, you’ll already find large crowds waiting in line.

Worse still, ticket availability at the counter is entirely dependent on visitor volume and can sell out at any time. So, after standing in line for hours, there’s no guarantee you’ll secure entry.

The same applies to St. Peter’s Basilica. While general entry is free, access to the dome, Vatican grottoes, and necropolis requires a paid ticket. These can also be purchased at the venue or online. However, as one of the world’s most visited cathedrals, the lines at the ticket counter are extremely long.

To save time and ensure availability, we highly recommend booking your tickets online in advance. Online ticket holders enjoy skip-the-line access and can begin exploring the attractions well before the larger crowds arrive.

2. Your Ticket Type Determines Your Waiting Time

At the Vatican Museum entrance, there are four separate queues, each based on the type of ticket:

On the left side of the entrance, you’ll find the queue for walk-in visitors purchasing tickets at the counter.

Opposite the main entrance are three marked passageways (1 to 3) for online ticket holders:

  • Passageway 1: Visitors with standard entry tickets booked via the official website.
  • Passageway 2: Guests with guided tour bookings through the official website.
  • Passageway 3: Visitors who purchased guided tours or tickets via third-party platforms like GetYourGuide and Tiqets.

These three online ticket queues move much faster, with an average waiting time of just 15 minutes. This is because ticket holders are required to arrive only 15 minutes before their scheduled time slot; early queuing is not allowed, helping maintain an orderly and controlled entry process.

In contrast, walk-in visitors must wait until all online ticket holders are admitted. Ticket availability for each time slot depends on real-time visitor volume inside the museum, meaning there is no guarantee that tickets will still be available once you reach the counter.

3. Discount tickets

While the entry ticket has a standard price, there are several ways to obtain Vatican Museum tickets at a discounted rate.

Children get discounted entry to the Vatican Museum, as there are age-based discounts. Some tickets also offer reduced price for youth and senior citizens.

Adults do not get reduced prices on regular tickets and tours. The best way to get a discount on adult tickets is by purchasing combo tickets or city passes. You can get a 10% discount on combo deals and over 50% off with the city pass. Guests should note that these tickets are available exclusively on online platforms.

Online booking platforms like Get Your Guide and Tiqets also offer early-bird discounts for advanced bookings. So do not miss out on them while pre-planning your visit.

Discounted tickets are also available for pilgrimages, school groups, university groups, students, seminaries and religious colleges.

4. Guided tour and meeting points

Guided tours of the Vatican Museum are either led by the museum guides or their affiliate tour provider. Based on your tour provider, the starting/meeting point of your tour will change. You can find the meeting on the ticket booking page and your final ticket. The meeting points are usually at the tour provider’s office or a common point not more than 500 meters from the entrance.

You will find your guide wearing a T-shirt with the company logo and carrying a similar flag for easy identification. You will get your guide’s contact information 24 hours before the tour. You will have to arrive 15 minutes before the tour time at the meeting point; hence, plan well in advance. The guide will not wait for latecomers or refund if you miss your group.

5. Free entry to the Vatican Museum

All visitors can get free entry to the Vatican Museum on the last Sunday of every month.

Free entry to the museum is available year-round for the following groups:

All the above groups of visitors can also claim free entry to the Papal Palace and Secret Garden of Castle Gandolfo.

Children under 7 years old receive free entry to the museum.

Visitors with at least 67% disability and one companion get free skip-the-line entry to the Vatican Museum.

Directors of museum institutions, managing boards of archaeological, historic, and artistic heritage and university teachers in the field of Archaeology, Art History, Architecture and Ethnology.

6. Cancellation and Refund Policy

The entry tickets to the Vatican Museum are generally not refundable. Most tours offer 24-hour easy cancellation and a complete refund. We recommend you read the cancellation policy before you book the tickets.
